Friday forecast for Friday: The Austin metro area is under a flash flood watch until Sunday morning as heavy rain threatens to overwhelm low-lying areas, urban creeks and streams. High near 81, low around 70.
Flash flooding possible in Central Texas
Rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected throughout Central Texas, resulting in possible flash flooding. Forecasters say heavy rains will be generated this weekend as an upper-level low pressure system that is slowly marching across Texas will interact with Hurricane Patricia — currently a Category 5 hurricane — as it tracks off the Pacific coast of Mexico.
Expect locally heavy rain to begin Friday morning and increase over Central Texas through Saturday night, the National Weather Service says. The heaviest rains are expected late Friday night but the rain threat will shift east by Sunday.
As of 6:45 a.m., the Austin-Travis County Emergency Operations Center has been activated to monitor public safety and transportation issues related to F1 and potential weather threats.
