The rain flooding the city of Houston this past weekend poured right into the sewers — which then poured right into the streets. Raw sewage leaked into the streets in five different areas in the city including downtown and the intersection of Travis and Commerce Streets. The Department of Public Works and Engineering has since confirmed that the spill has been contained, and the water supply system is being watched closely. Officials assured residents water was safe to drink without boiling it first.
Following the leak, affected streets in the “Bayou City” were scrubbed clean with a mixture of chlorine and bleach.
